“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

Our research

Thousands of years ago, ancient Greek physician Hippocrates in his monograph On Airs, Waters and Places already highlighted the link between humans’ environmental exposure and their health. Studying this connection, he believed, would lead the physician to the correct diagnosis.

CHERI-Afrika, too, believes that our wellbeing depends on the health of the environment in which we live. This is why we embrace the vision of One Health, realising that to address the health challenges and risks confronting 21st-century society, we need to find sustainable solutions to environmental pollution and degradation. This conviction is at the core of each of the research endeavours below.

Environmental Pollution and Pregnancy Outcomes Database (EPPO)

EPPO aims to work with health institutions and government agencies to integrate various data sources, working towards a comprehensive, reliable and accurate database on population health and environmental pollution.

Environmental Child Health Outcomes (ECHO)

This project will be both transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary examining the impact of environmental pollution beginning in pregnancy through to childhood.

Climate Health Accountability and Advocacy Initiative (CHAAI)

Through industrial collaboration partners, this project aims to educate communities about the threats to climate health due to human activities, inspire them to take charge of their own health and environment, and promote environmental accountability and discover sustainability solutions.

Environmental Pollution and Implementation Change (EPIC)

The focus of this project is to make environmental health research findings relatable for society through simplified translation. Furthermore, the work will discover strategies to engage decision makers to craft and implement policies to improve children’s environmental health nationally and globally.
